After one videogame hacker made his debut on YouTube, showing off his hacks to easily win player-versus-player battles in Guild Wars 2, the company properly dealt with the hacker, by logging into his account, killing the character one last time and permanently banning him in-game.
AreaNet, the company behind the widely popular online game, Guild Wars 2 dealt with an in-game cheater and hacker their own way. AreaNet humiliated the hacker then prompted to delete his character along with his entire online account from the server.
A Guild Wars 2 player known as Darkside, had been accused of teleporting around map and being able to withstand huge amounts of damage, yet escape fights with little to no harm, something that couldn’t have been possible in Guild Wars 2.
Darkside managed to anger many users, where teams would begin to hunt for Darkside and strike when he least expected it. The user sparked so much controversy, a thread of the official Guild Wars 2 website was created, prompting admins to investigate the hacker. One user said no matter what you do, he will always be back and just as strong.
To deal with the hacker, Guild Wars 2 users recorded videos of alleged fights with Darkside. The video below shows one of the alleged fights, where two users are shown in a heated battle, where as always, Darkside wins while taking little to no damage in game:
The above video gained the attention of AreaNet employee’s, prompting the administrators to do something about the cheater.
“We don’t need to see it in-game,” Chris Clearly said, who identified as Game Security Leader for Areanet. “Sometimes good video evidence is enough for me to track down who it was. In this case, the video was enough for me to find out who it was and take action.”
“To accompany your video, I give you this video of his account’s last moments,” Clearly posted in the thread. Accompanied by a video of the last few moments of DarkSide’s account.
In the video Clearly posted, a YouTube video shows Darkside characters being controlled by a staff member. Guild Wars 2 staff logged into Darkside’s account, publicly stripped his character into his underwear, waved goodbye, then led his character off of a building to his much anticipated death. The video then shows the staff member logout and delete both the Darkside’s characters.
“Oh yah, he’s also banned,” Clearly concluded in the forum.
Clearly confirmed that any other accounts associated with Darkside have been terminated and permanently ban from the Guild Wars 2 servers. How’s that for ‘cyber’justice?
